"description_short": "Moulded cups hold the fabric clear of your eyelids, 100% mulberry silk sits soft against the skin, and a silk-wrapped pull-on strap keeps the whole thing light enough to forget you are wearing it.",
"description": "The problem with most eye masks\n\nYou buy an eye mask because you want darkness. What you usually get is darkness plus a thin layer of fabric pressed onto your eyelids all night.\n\nFor some people that is fine. For plenty of others it is the reason the mask ends up on the floor by 2am. You blink and feel the fabric shift. You roll over and the elastic drags. You wake up with a crease across your face and a strap buckle somewhere behind your ear. None of that is dramatic, but it is enough friction to stop a mask becoming a habit.\n\nThen there is the light leak. Flat masks almost all fail at the same spot, the little triangle either side of the bridge of your nose. Hold a flat mask on your face and look down, and you will see two faint slivers of the room. In a dark bedroom you might not care. At 11am in a hotel with thin curtains, or in a window seat with the sun coming at you sideways, those slivers are exactly what keeps you awake.\n\nA contoured mask is the design answer to both problems at once.\n\nHow the contoured shape works\n\nInstead of a flat panel, this mask has two moulded domes built into the front. They arch over each eye socket. The weight and contact of the mask then sits on the firm parts of your face, the brow bone, the bridge of the nose and the top of the cheekbone.\n\nThree things follow from that.\n\nYour eyelids are free. You can open your eyes fully underneath the mask and feel nothing touching them. People who find flat masks claustrophobic often get on much better with a cupped design for this reason.\n\nNothing rests on your lashes. If you wear extensions, or you simply dislike the feeling of your lashes being folded against your cheek, this is the main reason to choose a contoured style over a flat one.\n\nThe seal at the nose improves. Because the mask is shaped rather than flat, the edge can follow the slope of your nose instead of bridging across it. That is where most of the stray light gets in.\n\nWhy 22 momme matters\n\nMomme is the unit silk is measured in. It describes the weight of a set area of fabric, so a higher momme means a denser cloth. Scarf-weight silk might be 12 or 16 momme. Good silk bedding tends to sit in the low twenties.\n\nAt 22 momme, this mask is on the substantial side. In practice that means it does not feel thin or papery, it holds its shape better, and it stands up to regular washing without feeling flimsy. The surface is smooth, as silk naturally is, so skin and hair slide across it with less drag than they would over a cotton mask.\n\nThe silk is also described as grade 6A mulberry. Grade 6A is the top tier used in the silk trade to describe long, even, uniform filament. It is a measure of the raw fibre, not a certificate, but it is a useful signal of what you are getting. Mulberry silk simply means the silkworms were fed on mulberry leaves, which produces the fine, regular thread that makes the best mulberry silk sleep mask feel the way it does.\n\nThe strap, which matters more than you think\n\nSleep masks fail at the back of the head as often as they fail at the front.\n\nBuckles and plastic sliders leave a hard lump somewhere on your skull. Back sleepers feel it immediately. Side sleepers feel it when they turn. Hook and loop fastenings are worse, because they grab hair every single time you take the mask off.\n\nThis one is a pull on design. The elastic is wrapped in silk, so the part touching your hair is smooth rather than scratchy. You put it on over your head and that is that. There is nothing to adjust, which some people miss and most people find a relief at midnight.\n\nThe trade off is honest. If you have an unusually large or small head, a fixed strap gives you no way to tune the tension. For the large majority of adults the elastic stretch covers it comfortably.\n\nWho this suits\n\nShift workers sleeping through daylight get the most obvious benefit, because daytime sleep is almost entirely a light management problem. A solid black mask with a shaped nose edge beats a pale flat one every time.\n\nFrequent flyers are the second group. The best travel sleep mask is one you can pull on in the dark without looking, that packs flat, and that does not press against the headrest. This ticks all three.\n\nSide sleepers do well with a buckle-free strap, since there is no hardware to trap between head and pillow.\n\nAnd then there is the everyday case. Partner reading late, streetlight through the curtains, an early summer sunrise. You do not need a reason beyond wanting the room to be darker than it is.\n\nHow to choose between masks\n\nA few things are worth checking whatever you buy.\n\nCup depth. Deeper cups mean more clearance for lashes but a slightly larger mask on the face. Shallower cups feel more discreet. If lashes are your reason for buying, go deeper.\n\nStrap type. Fixed pull on for simplicity and comfort at the back of the head. Adjustable for a precise fit if your head size sits at either end of the range.\n\nFabric weight. Below about 16 momme and silk starts to feel insubstantial. Twenty-two sits comfortably in the range you want for something that gets washed often.\n\nColour. Black is the practical choice for a sleep mask. Pale fabric can glow softly under a lamp, and that faint brightness is right where you do not want it.\n\nWashability. Anything you wear against your face every night needs washing every week or two. Check that the care instructions are something you will actually do.\n\nLooking after it\n\nSilk is not fragile, but it does not like heat or harsh detergent.\n\nHand wash in cool water with a detergent made for delicates. If you prefer the machine, put the mask in a mesh laundry bag and use a cool delicates cycle. Skip the bleach and skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibre and dulls the surface.\n\nDo not wring it. Press the water out between a folded towel, then lay it flat to dry somewhere out of direct sun and away from radiators. Dark silk in strong sunlight will fade over time.\n\nIf it needs pressing, use a low setting on the reverse of the fabric and keep the iron off the moulded cups. Store it so the cups are not crushed. The box it arrives in does that job perfectly well, and it keeps the mask easy to find in a drawer or a suitcase.\n\nA note on expectations\n\nA sleep mask is a piece of fabric that blocks light. That is what it does, and it does it well.\n\nIt will not make a noisy room quiet, it will not fix a bad mattress, and we are not going to tell you what it does to your skin or your hair beyond the plain fact that silk is a smooth fibre and things slide over it more easily than they do over cotton. If a claim sounds too good for a piece of cloth, it probably is.\n\nWhat you can reasonably expect is darkness, very little pressure on your eyes, and a strap that does not annoy you.\n\nThe short version\n\nThis is a black contoured mask in 100% mulberry silk at 22 momme, graded 6A. The moulded cups hold the fabric clear of your eyelids and lashes. The strap pulls on over the head and is wrapped in silk, so there is no buckle and nothing to catch your hair. It is light, it is solid black so nothing reflects light near your eyes, and it comes boxed.\n\nIf flat masks have never worked for you, the cupped shape is the single change most likely to fix it.",
"llm_summary": "A contoured sleep mask made from 100% mulberry silk at 22 momme, graded 6A, in solid black. The design uses moulded 3D cups so the fabric arches over the eyes and rests on the brow, nose bridge and cheekbones rather than pressing on the eyelids or lashes. Closure is pull on, with an elastic strap wrapped in silk, so there is no buckle or hook and loop fastening. The mask is light in weight and arrives boxed. Care is hand wash or a machine delicates cycle in a mesh bag, dried flat away from direct heat.",
